Eastwood Park Detention Centre in South Gloucestershire housed boys aged 14-17 from 1964 to 1995. Allegations of physical and sexual abuse by staff, particularly during the 1970s and 1980s, led to criminal convictions including former officer Patrick Devaney in 2023.

In response to the scandal, the Ministry of Justice has now launched a compensation scheme for survivors who suffered physical abuse:

£3,000 for detention up to three months

£4,000 for detention over three months

£7,500 - £9,500 for lasting physical or psychological injuries

The scheme also includes a formal apology from the Ministry of Justice.

If you experienced sexual abuse whilst detained at Eastwood Park, this can be pursued through civil litigation and is being handled by a specialist team at the Ministry of Justice.

If you experienced either physical or sexual abuse at Eastwood Park we recommend you take legal advice.  David Hawkins, a specialist in abuse compensation law with Biscoes Solicitors, has many years of experience in obtaining compensation for survivors of abuse, including through Redress Schemes such as the Lambeth Children’s Homes Redress Scheme and the Jesus Fellowship Redress Scheme.  If you have been affected, please don’t hesitate to contact David for confidential, no-obligation advice.
