On 16th January 2025, the Home Office announced that it proposes to increase fees on certain immigration applications.

Some of these applications include British naturalisation, Certificate of Sponsorship, and Electronic Travel Authorisation Scheme (ETA).

The proposal can be found here The Immigration and Nationality (Fees) (Amendment) Order 2025 ISBN 978-0-348-26809-6.  This is a draft item of legislation and has not yet been made as a UK Statutory Instrument and is yet to be approved by both the House of Commons and the House of Lords.

What are some of the proposed increases?

  • The fee for assigning a Certificate of sponsorship (CoS) on work routes: is to increase from £239 to £525

  • The application fee for naturalisation as a British citizen rises from £1500 to £1,605

  • The fee for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is set to increase from £10 to £16  (From 2 April 2025, all those visitors (non-visa nationals) travelling to the UK will need to apply for an ETA) this does not include those in transit- “the government has agreed a temporary exemption for passengers who transit airside, and therefore do not pass through UK border control, from needing an ETA.”

  • The fee for naturalisation as a British Overseas Territories citizen to increase from £1000 to £1070.
