The huge importance of making a Will

You’ve probably heard it many times, but here’s a crucial reminder why making a Will is essential:

  • Without a Will, your property, possessions, and money may pass to family members under the Rules of Intestacy. This could include unintended beneficiaries, those you do not wish to benefit or do not trust.
  • If you have children, it can be uncertain who should look after them without a Will, potentially leaving the decision to a court. You can appoint a guardian under your Will.
  • If you are not married or in a civil partnership with your partner, they will not automatically inherit your home, possessions, or assets.
  • If you are married but separated and not yet divorced, your assets could still pass to your ex-spouse. You can create a Will to ensure your assets pass elsewhere.

When should you make a will?

If you have assets over £5,000, own property, or have children, you should make a Will. It’s vital to appoint a guardian for your children, considering who shares your life values and who can responsibly manage your assets for your child’s benefit.

We recommend you review your Will every 3 to 5 years to ensure it still meets your needs. Amendments can be made via a ‘codicil’ or by drafting a new Will and revoking or destroying the old one.

For an approximate investment of £300, you could potentially save your estate thousands in legal fees by preventing disputes. You can also save on Inheritance Tax by creating a tax efficient Will.
